Hesham Maged and Riham Abdel Ghafour Lead Cairo Into Chaos with Bershama’s Scene-Stealing Billboards
Cairo’s streets are suddenly in on the joke, as the Bershama billboard campaign turns a passing glance into a full-blown comedic setup.
There’s something immediately disarming about the way the film presents itself on Cairo’s billboards. At the center, Hesham Maged serves as the anchor with his wide-eyed expression that borders on panic or disbelief. Next to him, Riham Abdel Ghafour conveys an intensity that serves only to heighten the sense of tension. And around them, the rest of the cast, including Moustafa Ghareeb, Hatem Salah, Taha Desouky, and Bassem Samra, each in the midst of their reaction, presents a composition that feels less like an advertisement and more like a still from a perfectly timed comedic moment.
The title, in bold, cursive yellow Arabic script, cuts across the frame with an almost mischievous confidence. It doesn’t present itself in a subtle way; it presents itself in a way that disrupts, much like the premise of the film itself. Against the muted tones of the classroom in the background, the typography is the joke.
All the characters are clustered together, almost compressed in the image. This is fitting because the situation depicted is like an examination hall running out of control. Every aspect of their costume, traditional or over-the-top, is like adding another dimension. It is like an image that demands scrutiny; the more you look at it, the more you spot.
Even the background, the classroom scene, or the simple credits, serve a purpose. They make the absurdity seem more familiar, hence easier to relate to.
